 The increased need for information

Globalisation with intensified competition has brought about a sharp increase in the need for companies to receive information about their markets. Technological development within certain areas is very fast moving and the more profitable the industry, the larger the number of players who want their share.

The importance of patents, trademarks, designs and other types of protection for intangible assets has risen considerably and the need to protect them cannot be stressed sufficiently.

In tandem with these types of protection, we must, now, watch our competitors more carefully and from an earlier stage. Insufficient knowledge about the activities of others in “your” market may result in adverse consequences and it is a necessity to stay alert so that you neither miss opportunities nor trespass on someone else’s rights.

No surveillance, no awareness

How far have your closest competitors advanced? What patents, trademarks and designs are relevant? Where are they valid? For how long are they valid? What has happened within my company’s technical domain during the last 6 months or even the last month? What licence fees may l expert based on what l know about the market in France or Germany? How far advanced are the Americans and the Japanese?

The questions are many and frequently come from multiple sources in an organisation. Senior management wants one type of information, the research and development divisions another and the Board of Directors yet another Further, the information has to be presented in different ways depending on its purpose.

It is not always easy to monitor the market. In order to make strategically correct business decisions, it is necessary to have a good grasp of the markets multiple components, from competitors and patent holders through to specific technical developments. Monitoring also costs money, involving as it does personnel and other resources. We know from experience the pressures imposed by the need to satisfy the rising demand for ever-faster information flows whilst simultaneously meeting the day-to-day demands of the business. Large sums are at stake. It is vital to think strategically and cost-effectively in relation to your intellectual property rights. We can help you with this process.
